Chapter 9 Response - Anooj Shah

Question: How did the rise of radios affect Americana culture and/or music?

Since the radio was brought into the world of media, there has been an increase in musical talent and popularity. Not only have the artist become more talented but they have definitely brought a greater good to the table. In It Still Moves by Amanda Petrusich, she moves her journey to Kentucky where she investigates her inquiries on the radios affect on Americana culture and music. I have come to believe that the radio disc jockeys and artists that went mainstream on the radio were veterans and used their experience to teach the younger generation.
In Chapter 9 of the book, it goes into talking about how George D. Hay launched hillbilly radio shows called The WSM Barn Dance and Grand Ole Opry. Then, Uncle Dave Macon an eight year veteran entertainer joined Opry and brought plenty of music including vaudeville songs, blues, and gospel. This also goes to show that the rise of radios made older folk music much more popular and brought new genres to light.
"By 1930, federal census reports claimed that 12,078,345 American families owned radios; with its invisible, indiscriminate sound waves, radio effectively bridged the social and geographic gaps between rural and urban music listeners" (Petrusich 153). The rise of radios in Americana culture greatly impacted Americana music because it helped bring together different races, create an up rise in new genres, and clearly bring new artists to the musical world.

The music listed above shows a lot about the people that listen to it. Our personalities can somewhat be determined off of these lists. The music that we listened to when we were younger (Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears) is typically upbeat music. This shows that we are outgoing and have fun. Also, the variation in the music we listen to today shows that we are all individuals. There is a lot of different music and people listen to what is relatable to them.

As mentioned before, the music we listened to was fun and usually not very 'serious' music. This is representative of our generation as a whole. The outlooks and beliefs of many of the people in our generation is to live life to the fullest and enjoy yourself. Many people live by the saying 'you only live once."

The type of music a person listens to describes their identity in a lot of aspects. Some people use it to express or relate to events in their own life. It can also be used as a stress-reliever, like when you listen to music at the gym. The music a person listens to indicates what their mood or personality is like.

Music can say a lot about a person's personality and beliefs. For some music is a way to escape the obstacles that are put in front of them and for some it's just something to listen to. Through the generations of life music has changed the way people feel. To look at music through different generations is quite interesting because of how the music styles has changed.
Between the ages of 5 and 10, our generation was listening to music that was popular or influenced by the people around us; like family, friends, or just people in general. At a younger age, kids did not have a choice on what they were listening to so they were into other people's music that surrounded them. Whatever that was in the mainstream became the trend of that time. In order to be "cool" kids were trying to fit into the crowd by listening to the most popular music of that time.
Each person has their own different style of music they're interested in. At the age of 15, a majority of our generation might be interested in hip hop. The style of music might be a trend or something that is popular to teens and young adults. 5 years later, their interest of style might be the same because that is the only style that they are interested in. If their style of music changes after 5 years that would just mean their interest in music has changed.

At age 5, the choice of music that we listened to was influenced by only one factor. That factor was our parents. In other words, we listened to whatever was popular for our parents or whatever they chose for us. We didn't seem to mind mainly because didn't care much about music at the time. We just paid attention to the rhythm, and if it had a good rhythm, we enjoyed the song. It is very clear that we had no control over what we listened to at that time.

At age 10, we were influenced by a few factors. One of the main factors was our friends in school that we spent time with most of the day. We tended to listen to whatever they loved to listen to. Another huge factor was television that influenced what kind of music we listened to. There were songs present in cartoons, commercials, and channels dedicated to music. And the radio was the final factor that influenced our choice of music. The radio had nothing but stations full of popular music that we had access to which slowly began to develop our style of music.

At age 15, we became more independent in our choice of music. We began to listen to whatever we enjoyed the most. The biggest factor that allowed us to be independent was when we learned how to drive, and got our own car. We were able to listen to any music we wanted on the radio in the car. As a result, we began to develop our own genre of music. However, we were still influenced by others in a way especially since this is the time that we were in high school. We still listened to music that was deemed as popular among our classmates in order to fit in, but our individual choice was stronger overall. In the present, our choice of music has shaped our identity. We pretty much listen to a specific genre. For example, based on our group's songs at this time, it shows that hip-hop is taking over.

At five years old the music that we choose is largely based on many factors in our lives. Our parents are a big part of our lives and they influence a lot of things in our lives, music being one of them. We grow up listening to our parent’s music and we tend to pick up on them. Another factor that contributes to our music choice would we what was popular at that time. We are in school at that time and we make friends and we tend to share music choices. Finally, as children we tend to watch cartoons afterschool and we tend to pick up on the melody, rhythm, and beats of the songs. These factors are our foundations to our music choice. They are our guiding factors that help us find our music choice.

At age ten we start to form our own ideas about music and with the help the television, friends, and what’s popular at that time. We start forming our own ideas, and we start using our higher thinking and question things including music. Since we are growing we start making friends and start socializing in groups. We start sharing music, and introduce new artist to new friends. At this age we start showing signs of maturity in our music selection.

At age 15, we get drenched with responsibility. We start going to high school and we meet a lot of new people. With this meeting our knowledge of music enhances. This new enhancement we start figuring our true musical identity. At this age we start to learn how to drive. We start to tune into the radio more often and we are exposed to more variety of music. We are given more freedom to pick our music at this time in life. We also tend to pick up on the lyrics and understand the meaning behind them more frequently then we used to. As we graduate and go off to college meet a ton of people and we start forming bigger groups. We start relating to the artists’ songs and form bonds with the artists’

At a young age we listened to whatever was playing on the TV or the radio. We really did not care for music at a young age. And, because of that it really does not describe our personality. We listened to what our parents or siblings were listening to. For some of us if we listened to the songs we listened to when we were young, we would not like it.

As we grew up we started to branch out from our parents and siblings. We listened to our music. I can remember when I have to fight over the radio, so I could listen to my music. We also heard more music because at this time technology was a big thing. We had computers that could play us music, and we also could download songs. Youtube was the main reason why we could hear new and different music.

In conclusion we did not have one type of genre. Our generation had a lot of music to choice from. The reason why was from technology, and what this says about our generation is that we are willing to listen to anything.

As children we did not follow our own music. Most of us listened to what our siblings were listening to or what our parents listened to. Because of this music when we were five did not really say much about our personalities or beliefs. It would, however, have something to say about our parents or siblings.
When we were 10 a lot of the music we listened was influenced by our friends. Most of us listened to pop music that was really big in the mid 90s. I do not think as kids we really took the time to analyze the lyrics to these songs, but more listened to the beat that was in the background. We liked music that was easy to dance to and have fun with our friends. What this says about our personalities as children was that we were really care free and just wanted to have fun with friends and fit in.
At fifteen most of us were still slightly influenced by our peers but we were also trying to figure out who we were as individuals. This is where music began to vary within our group. The music we chose to listen to is the music we believed defined us as teens. Those of us who enjoyed more up beat music were the ones who liked to get out and socialize and those who liked the mellower music were more laid back.
Now as we are older music begins to really describe a personality. For those who analyze music lyrics a song could have a lot of meaning. Some types of music are used as mood enhancers and some music is used as upbeat party songs. Today most of the songs on the radio are taking on a more up beat dance type of music. What that can say about our generation is that it is now socially acceptable for people to party and the popular songs lyrics do have a lot to do with drinking and drugs. Music is straying away from the traditional instrument and voice and is changing along with the technology. Not everyone listens to the popular songs on the radio but the majority of the people listen to whats popular and what the radio is playing.

When we were younger the biggest music trend that we noticed was that their were a lot of boy and girl groups. Whether it was Backstreet Boys, Hansons, or the Spice Girls they all played the same type of music that was enjoyable. The boy and girl groups had catchy and fun music that we made up dances to with our friends. We were influenced the most by others who were usually older than us; some being siblings, neighbors, or friends.
During our pre-teen, and teenage years band groups were still popular but slowly disappearing. For example, in the band Dream Street the member Jesse McCartney went from band member to solo artist; as did Justin Timberlake from the band N Sync, and many others. Pop and rock music was the most popular around that time. We also began to start experimenting with music, listening to new music depending on the group of our friends at that time. The experiences in our lives started to show through the music we listened to. If we were in a happy, or sad mood it reflected in the song and artist we listened to.
Now the music that is on the radio has more of a party scene feel, and most of the music has a happy upbeat tempo. Hip hop has begun to be very popular because of it's upbeat rthym, catchy lyrics and dance routines. Solo female artists such as Rihanna and Kesha have become very popular. Technology is playing a major role in the music now a days, the talent of an artists voice isn't as important as their individuality and uniquness. We are now branching out on our own with the music we listen to and choosing the types of music that we like.

When we were young, we did not really have control over what we listened to. Our parents pretty much controlled what we did, hear, and see. It is amazing to see how we grow out of our childish habits and

As we grew into young teenagers, we realized we fell more into following what our friends were interested in. They say young minds are highly influential and we believe that was definitely true we were surrounded by our friends. We quickly picked up their habits and interests. We are interested in what we are exposed to and when we have a group of friends, we all tend to like the same thing. At this age, we usually do not accept different thoughts or interests. We usually all want to fit in and therefore we are interested in what the majority likes. Because of this, we do not have our own true identity at this age.

Our generation today pretty much listens to all different genres. Most of us listen to music on the radio and we listen to all the popular songs. We might be fans of hip-hop or r&b but we can still listen to country because its on the radio and it's popular.

After comparing all the music our four group members listened to, we have found many similarities. When we were young we all found ourselves listening to what our parents and or siblings listened to. Our music portrayed the beliefs or others around us. This ranged from disney movie music to Puff Daddy. As we got older we found to still be very influenced by our surroundings and what others listened to.
However when we reached 15 we were able to clearly decide what we listened to. All of us seemed to listen to rather emotional music that we could relate to. we found comfort in music that could express some of what we felt at that very crucial age. We were formulating our personality by the music we listened to. It had changed a lot from the earlier years.
Finally now, our music taste has evolved much. We have finally settled down and found who we are through music. However, we have realized that we like all different kinds of music. We believe this has happened because now that we have each gotten a taste of many different types of music we like them all. Our minds have been broadened and evolved. For some of us our personal belief of faith was found in the music we listened to. We have found more of a personal connection with the music we listened to and the lives we lead. Our music tastes have matured and we think it will continue to do so as we get older.

Each of us come from different cultural backgrounds. We all began at a young age listening to music from our heritage. In the beginning, the music we were listening to were influenced by our parents. The majority of our music when we were younger were folk music. As we grew up, we weren't influence by our past, but from the United States ways.

Our genre's changed quickly as we grew older. We were all influenced by our peers. Most of us listened to what was "in" with our group of friends at the time. Even though we were close in age, we all listened to different kind of music. What this shows about our generation is that it's very spread out when it comes to music.

In the world, there are different genres of music that influence us individually. We all come from the same generation, but we were influenced by different parts of the world. That is why we like the kind of music now. It is clear that although we start out listening to the music from our backgrounds, we all ended up having our own taste of music.

At the age of five most of us just listened to what was being played. It was pretty much when we were first exposed to music. Parents, relatives, and friends influenced our music choice.

By the age of 10 many of us have picked up the mainstream media music which was being regularly played on the radio. Dominating the airwaves were the ever so popular boy bands, pop singers, and rappers. It was by this age that many of us were grouped by together with friends that had the same taste in music.

When we reached the adolescent stage of 15, many of us have branched out in search for music that would satisfy our rebellious needs. We wanted music that would express our emotions and believed that the music understood how we felt.

By the ages of 18-21 we solidified our tastes in music. Even though we constantly listen to different bands, the style of music that we listen to now is relatively the same as when we were age 15. It is the same genre whether it be techno or rock and roll. The kinds of music that we listen to now has been influenced by our friends, and we still keep an open mind of different types of music. But it is mostly what we listened to age 15.

Young children do not really have a musical identity of their own. They are influenced by others around them, which includes family members. A 5 year old is sheltered musically and is not aware of the different genres or styles out there. A child doesn't listen to the lyrics, they just enjoy the sound and rhythm. As they age they slowly start to broaden their musical horizon.

When a person reaches mid teens they start to acquire a taste in music. They will most likely expand upon these tastes as they grow older. Nothing is set in stone because they're still searching for a musical identity. Instead of being influenced by family members, taste is influenced by the radio and television. As we age a person isn't subjected to one genre, but can listen to many different styles. This adds to the complexity of their musical arsenal, and will make their music taste more well rounded.

The final step is the ability to dissect music and look into the lyrics. Rather than being drawn in by sound, the listener develops an emotional attachment to songs, especially if they can relate to the words. Music reaches a new personal level.

Amanda Petrusich's book, It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for the Next American Music, is a collection of her experience in her trip in the south. She decided to go to the south to find more about Americana music, and the south is known to be the mother of Americana music. She decided to hit the road, traveling along old roads that itself were considered Americana.

How does she go about to share her experiences and findings? In each chapter, she begins to explain her surroundings, items that define that city. With each historic finding comes with history itself. she tends to give a history of each historic figure whether its an item or people.

Through the history she describes Americana Music itself. Petrusich attempts to set a difference between Americana music and the Hillbilly music that we think about today. She intrigues her readers with questions and slowly answers them while absorbing them into americana music.

At that age, our taste and outlooks were influenced by everything around us and we didn't have a real sense of our tastes of music. At age 10, we started getting a little bit more particular about the music we listened to and not what our parents listened to. We all listened to mainstream music, groupies, boy bands and shit. Britney Spears was the hottest girl around. Jennifer Lopez was my Jenny from the block. She was what every guy fantasized about. Our personalities and tastes in music were changing and we started figuring out what we liked to listen to and what we disliked.

Around age 15 was the time when everyone went down their own path and listened to simply what they enjoyed whether it was mainstream or not. Our personalities had been developed and we were becoming mature and growing fast. We weren't fully developed in our music taste but 8/9 of the way there. Friends were who influenced your music choice. A lot more different radio stations started coming out playing different types of music, not just mainstream songs. We started downloading music on our computers and to our ipods. We started going to concerts of our favorite artists and bands. Music became a bigger part of our lives than anytime before. The songs we listed described who we are as a person.

Today at the ages of 18-20, we have fully grown and our personalities have completely developed. Mainstream music is not what everyone listens to. Everyone has their own taste in music. Music is a big part of our lives today. The type of music you listen to today, tells a lot about who you are. Now days, we are listening to a lot of old school music. We watch a lot of MTV and the songs they play seem to be real popular for our age group. Lyrics are just as important to us as the beat of the song.

We noticed that when we were 5 and 10 we listened to mostly what we were exposed to from television shows. We didn't know many genres except for those. We listened to songs that were played around the house and what our parents allowed us to listen to. These songs don't say that much about us but more about our surroundings. They reflect the people we grew up with.
When we were 15 and 19 we began to branch out of the music we grew up with and began branch out and listened to songs that reflected more of who we are. We were influenced by more people when we were 15. Our music started to define who we are. We listened to a different genres to figure what type of music fit us best. These songs also reflect a bit more about our personality than the music from when we were 5 and 10.
This showed us our growth over time of who we are. We learned that when we were little we were easily influenced. Our taste of music changes because we have to find ourselves through our music we listen to different genres and find out which defines us best. Now our music helps us feel comfortable. The songs from when we are 15 and 19 reflects more our beliefs and gives us identity.

Well to start, the age of five was a pretty simple time in music for all of us. It was mostly what was on the radio or the theme song of a show that we all loved to watch(possibly still watch.) Even though it was not that huge of an impact, the music of the time really helped open us up to music through different outlets. Listening to the music now becomes a moment of nostalgia. Being 10 changed the rules a little bit for all of us. Everyone listened to the same thing because we wanted to "fit in." Anooj seems to be the only one who didn't go with the boy band fever or the pop princess cults. Still the years around that age were very interesting because elementary school was a "who can fit in better with everyone else." There was no need to find yourself because we were all like everyone else.

High school was the big defining moment in our lives. That time was when we were all trying to figure out who we were and music was an outlet of that journey. High school is divided into cliques and everyone fit into one of those. Being with those cliques helped introduce us into different music that is not quite in the know but fit who we were/are. Different cliques would say that music sucked but mainly because they didn't know what the music was or sounded like. Yet everyone was willing to learn about the music during high school. It was another time in our lives that expanded our music horizons. Learning about other genres and artists but not quite liking it or just absolutely loving it was what high school was about for all of us.

College. The next big chapter in our lives as most people call it. A time that will define us almost indefinitely as a person. The music that we brought with us from high school helped us get to know others who were into the same music. The same music also brought us closer to people who knew music that we didn't know and brought into our horizons...again. Just walking around the halls in the dorms or simply asking people what they listened to was a gateway to new people, ideas, and music. Music now is not only something that we enjoy listening to but also a major part of our lives and who we are.

Question: Petrusich sets out on a journey to find out more about Americana music. How does the place we come from influence the type of music that is made?

Petrusich starts off this chapter by stating what New York is like. She gives us the illusion that it is very a busy and lively place. Then, she goes on to talk about the south and how it's calm there. Furthermore, she explains that the south is where all good music comes from. Americana, originating not from New York, but from the south is then a good example of how where we are from influences the type of music that is made.

Presentation is a major influence on the type of music that is made. The instruments used for example, such as banjos and acoustic guitars exemplify the typical instruments used in the music made in the south. It would be very unlikely to hear loud beating drums and electric guitars roaring through the radio in an environment where people are for the most part calm.

Americana is easy listening and where else would it originate, if not in a place where people like to take it easy? The lifestyles of people in a certain area, especially in rural areas, tend to be similar and therefore, what is written about in Americana music, often reflects the everyday lifestyle of those who live there. Furthermore, the struggles along with the things people enjoy are reflected upon in accordance to where they are from.

In her book, It still moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and the Search for the Next American music by Amanda Petrusich, the author starts out by telling a story about her life in New York. She talks about how New York City seems so new to her everyday because it’s so big and She feels out of place living there. She transitions to talking about searching for the real American music. From the first chapter, one can observe that Petrusich asks herself lot of questions. She wanted to know about everything and why something is the way it is. She asks herself about what American music really is. This is reason she decides to take break from New York City and go down south in search of real American music. You also realize that when Petrusich visits the Graceland, she asks herself lots of different questions regarding Elvis Presley and his life.

Petrusich talks about lots of different artists and their music. Starting from Chapter one, she names and talks about different artists including Elvis Presley, John Lomax, Alan Lomax, etc. You would realize that when she talks about the artists, she shows respect to them. She talks about them in a well professional manner. She doesn’t express her feeling in all negative way, but she respects what the artists had to offer and what they were about.

Petrusich examines issues from multiple points of view. She does look at and consider other peoples’ ideas. She doesn’t just say she knows everything about Elvis Presley, she actually goes and visits Graceland and tries to find out more details about Elvis’s life. Another is example is how she lives in New York but always say people would have different opinions of living in this city. She also looks at other peoples’ views in music. She doesn’t take what she knows but she actually decides to travel and gain more knowledge about music.

Entry #2- Chapter 2 blog post

In Chapter 2, the author describes a few historical events in Memphis, Tennessee that shaped the way many things are today down there. I feel that there were two events specifically mentioned that were of more significance than the others.
The first historical event is the story of Beale Street and how it came to be. Way back in the day, downtown Memphis was mainly for the white folks. Blacks were usually mistreated and only looked at after the whites were served. As a result of that, the African-American population of Memphis decided to take their business to Beale Street which was primarily run by Jewish and Black businesses. Here, African-Americans felt the equality they weren't getting downtown, so Beale Street became the next hotspot for the Black population. Soon after, it established its famous name with the adaptation of music, food and culture that still stands today.
The second historical event is the protesting that took place by African-Americans over unequal rights and unfair treatment. The most significant figure in this time was obviously Martin Luther King Jr. He was the leader of the pack. He stood for equal rights for not only blacks, but for all people. After spending some time in Memphis conducting rallies, the unthinkable happened. While standing on his balcony, he was assassinated. This marked one of the most significant events in American history and inevitably led to reform in the times to come.

Petrusich’s inquiry is where Americana music originated. "This is why I decide to climb into my scratched-up Honda Civic and start driving, leaving New York City to learn more about where the songs I love come from and, when I am very lucky, why" (Petrusich 16). Petrusich, like any other human, has many question about the past. She travels to the South in order to better understand why music started and how it changed. Starting in New York and making her way south, to Memphis, she questions how streets received there names as well as other things.

Petrusich is very detailed in her writing. She gives thoroughly background of every person she mentions. Her details are extremely important though because she is trying to define what Americana is. If she was vague in her writing then her meaning of Americana would also be vague. In Chapter 4 when Petrusich was in Graceland, she described Elvis’s mansion, the main street, as well as the hotel she was in in depth. We can visualized the setting better and can also make interferences on the music being made at the time.

Petrusich also never disrespected any one or their opinions. Though the patrons and some customers were dressed up as Elvis, Petrusich respected them. She understands that Elvis was there fan when they were younger. It is no different then individuals dressing up today to see a present concert. She also tells us myths of Elvis’s house and leaves it up to us to believe them or not.

In the book, It Still Moves: Lost Songs, Lost Highways, and The Search for The Next American Music by Amanda Petrusich, she asks many question to understand why things are the way they are. For example she said, “What does Americana look like? Is it a John Deere alarm clock? A wooden yo-yo? A peppermint stick? A tin of Virginia Peanuts? What does it sound like? Does it move?” (5). She is trying to answer the main question, What does Americana look like? Within that question she states a lot more questions to understand the main question.

Amanda Petrusich tries to observe why Americana is not that important now a day. “There is no pressure for Americana music so rarely fractures the Hot 100 Billboard charts” (6). American music which is mainly folk and country music rarely ever becomes a hit in the 21st century. Because of that Amanda tries to understand why this phenomena or behavior is happening.

Amanda also tries to examine the issues from other points of view. Amanda wants everyone’s opinions so she can make a better thesis. In the first two chapters she explains how there are two different types of culture. Especially when she goes to New York she kind of faces a new world. New York is a place where new people get lost in its culture. She then learns from both cultures.
