Entry 1- David Jolly

In the book, “It Still Moves” by Amanda Petrusich, there is one chapter where Petrusich goes to many cities and tries to find the meaning of Americana music. Her journey shows that her belief in music and the true definition of Americana are strong within her. Her beliefs in the true meaning of Americana are very important to her that she actually is going to search the country to delve into this abstract concept. She wants to know why Americana is what it is. Her book itself makes the reader question what Americana and Americana music actually is, and makes the reader question how she is supposed to find this meaning.

There is another chapter where Petrusich goes to Graceland. She explores the old house of Elvis and somewhat delves into his life. It was very odd to me because when she was talking about Elvis and his family, they all seemed so close and seemed to be there for each other. It was puzzling how Elvis could then succumb to the world of drugs and die at his young age. It was questionable to me if Putusich’s portrayal of the Presley family was all that accurate.

On Petrusich’s chapter on Sam Phillips, Petrusich talks about how Sam Phillips was a person that contributed greatly to the birth of rock and roll. Others can easily oppose that view and think of that view in reverse. Some people can say that it was more of the artists that Sam Phillips signed that created the birth of rock and roll, rather than Sam Phillips himself. It all comes down to the question if it was Sam Phillips who made the artists famous, or was it the artists that made Sam Phillips famous. Either way, both points of view can be used and validated.
