Entry #1 - Sorina Bilea

Examine Alternatives
Petrusich stated that her mission was to find out how our collective ideas about Americana are changing, where they started, how those notions are preserved, celebrated, and milked for profit, how the places we come from influence the sounds we make, and how Americana music is transforming to accommodate the massive cultural and geographical shifts in the American landscape. She decided to take a road trip to get closer to the songs she loved and because "every good story about America is also a story about the road." Although she does describe musical aspects of the places she visits, she gives a lot of unnecessary details of things like what she ate or what she bought from the gas station. She focused more on other details of her trip and didn't focus as much on her mission.

Reflect on what you observe
Petrusich describes everything thoroughly and that allows the reader to understand everything better. A good example of this was when she stopped at Lousiville's Brown Hotel and ate her first Hot Brown. A sloppy, buttery, open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon, pimento, and Parmesan cheese, all soaked in a puddle of gooey Mornay sauce. Aside from burgoo, an opaque stew of mutton, lima beans, okra, corn, potatoes, and cornmeal.

Engage with the ideas of others
Petrusich is on a mission. She wants to find out more about Americana. She does this in a non-judgmental way. She does not bring down any ideas she just tries to make observations and learn from what she sees and finds out. She tries to make things interesting and vivid for readers to enjoy.
