Steps to inquiry: In chapter 2 of It Still Moves by Amanda Petrusich, the author directly states what her mission is on her road trip. She is out to learn more about where the music she loves comes from and why does it come from there. Petrusich asks questions such as, "How are our collective ideas about Americana changing? Where did they start? How are those notions preserved, celebrated, milked for profit? How do the places we come from- our hometowns, our regions, our city blocks- influence the sounds we make? And, most important, how is Americana music transforming to accommodate the massive cultural and geographical shifts in the American landscape?"(pgs 16-17). These are questions to find out why things are the way thery are and also the answers to these questions will explore how change is occurring.
Steps to Seeking and Valuing Complexity: Throughout the novel Petrusich not only goes on about the current conditions of the places she visits, but also tells the stories of the past of these locations. In particular so far Petrusich's reflection on her tour of the Sun studio caught my attention the most. Pertrusichs goes on about how many now well known artists first came through here and also how, "Phillips was the first producer to redefine tradtional Americana music, threading together disparate bits harvested from dark southern landscapes,"(pg 51).
Steps to Joining an Academic Conversation: Petrusich shares stories from multiple people to create her story about Americana music. Not only are her ideas in it, but others as well. Pertrusich throws in the little tangents of what is actually occurring, but also gives a detailed history of the past.
