Although Sam Phillips contributed to the success of rock n' roll music by recording the artists I do not believe he is the one who deserves all the credit. The artists themselves who made the music are the ones who really founded rock n' roll music and I think that if Sam Phillips did not record them, they would have eventually stumbled across another producer who would. Rock n' roll is such a catchy type of music that it would have caught on and caught the eye of someone else it just so happens Sam Phillips was the first to see the beauty of rock n' roll.
Sam Phillips does deserve the credit, however, in being the first person to record rock n' roll. As stated by Sam Phillips "Rocket 88' was the record that really kicked it off for me, as far as broadening the base of music and opening up wider markets for our local music" (37). He did do his part in really starting off rock n' roll.
His recording style was unique and I do have a lot of positive things to say about how he really helped rock n' roll, but I think it is the talent of the artists that should be recognized over the producer in most cases.
In the case of Elvis I think Sam Phillips deserves the credit. Phillips put a whole new style into the first song he recorded for Elvis. Elvis also only covered songs and did not create his own music. Phillips was the one to really make Elvis shine by asking him to record for him. Elvis was not an established musician at the time and might have never been discovered if it werent for Phillips.
