Entry #1 Steve Herbst

Amanda Petrusich is on a mission to find the roots of true american music. She loves blues and decides to travel the south to find out where it came from and why American music has since then changed so drastically. Her trip first lands her in Memphis where she focuses at first not on musicians themselves but rather the people who are responsible recording and producing this music. Sam Philips was one of the first people in Memphis to record and spread this music. Philips would record musicians as the came to his shop and them some of them made it to the radio where they began to slowly gain fame. Philips had created Sun Records who had recorded many famous musicians such as Elvis Presley.
Next Petrusich ends up in Clarksdale where a lot of music originated by the people working on the plantations around the Mississippi river Delta. This area produced its own type of blues coined as Delta Bules and is a very American form of folk that was heavily influenced by black slave songs. Petrusich trip is uncovering the history of her love, Americana music.
