According to Petrusich, what makes songs/music timeless? In your opinion, what makes music timeless and are there any bands you think will be timeless?
In chapter 10, to be specific page 164, Petrusich talks about what makes a song or music timeless through the example of The Carter Family. She goes into detail about how the family does a number of things to the music they make so that it is unique. A few of the things she talks about include "snatching rhythms and choruses, rewriting and reimagining ancient tracks." In a few sentences later she pulls from Zwonitzer and Hirshberg, who said "negotiate the gap betwer the insular culture of preindustrial Appalachia and the newly modern America." What she is trying to say from these excerpts is that in her opinion and knowledge from her journey, making timeless music or song requires a lot of imagination that combines the old and the new together in a unique way.
I personally believe that to make music timeless requires a little different focus. Timeless music in my opinion would include The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Beegees, etc. All of which are artists who made an impact on today's music in a special way. They united people in hard times and gave them all something to listen to each other about. Timeless music in my brief opinion is music that has made or will make a change so that everyone will remember it forever no matter if you like the music or not, just knowing WHO made the music is enough.
In the chapter Petrusich uses the quote from Zwonitzer and Hirshberg to show that the Carter Family "[learned to] negotiate the gap between the insular culture of preindustrial Appalachia and the newly modern America" (164). Petrusich means that the Carter Family learn to combine tunes and lyrics from the preindustrial APpalachia and modern America to create a unique sound that really struck a chord and stayed with people. Elvis Presley did the same thing when he began his music career by successfully interpreting the black mans music into a new style he could say was his own, which many people took a liking to. By interpreting two styles, one from the past and one modern, a band creates a unique sound which has the best of both worlds and becomes timeless.
I think that the timeless bands are the ones that combined multiple genres together and by doing so they created a new sound that no one has heard, which set the foundation for all the bands nowadays. They started playing the music they wanted and not the music that the record companies wanted to hear, which is what all bands nowadays do. Such bands would be Led Zeppelin, The Clash, The Rolling Stones, and Elvis Presley. Those guys got on stage and said f you we're going to play what we want, if you don't want to listen the door is right there. They didn't care what they what they're record labels said, those guys were true rock'n'rollers and that is why their music will live on forever.
