  2. The south is the one place that Amanda Petrusich credits for the beginning of Americana music. The sole reason for her journey is to get to the inception of where the music came from. In chapter one,Petrusich states " So in order to get closer to the songs I love-Americana music-to see where they started and what they've created; to fully understand the ways in they've been perverted and rearranged and revisited, there was only ever one place for me to go: back down south" (Petrusich 16). Obviously, Petrusich feels that the south is where music began, specifically Americana music.

In the quote listed above, there are many examples of what the south contributed to Americana music. There are specific styles of music that Petrusich gives examples of "uncontrollable country, blues, and folk" (Petrusich 16). Petrusich in other words is giving the south credit for those specific genres of music. However, apart from quotes from the book, we can use general knowledge to know that the South has had a huge effect on Americana music. There are many historical events that lead to different genres of music. An example of an historical time period or event would be slavery which lead to the blues. So, to answer the question, the South has attributed different genres of music. The south can also be arguably where Americana music began.

  3. The south shaped the music that we listen to today. They started country music, the blues, folk music, and gospel. The blues, gospel, and folk music all began with slavery in the south. Country, also emerged from the south, but was known as "hillbilly music". The ideas used in these types of genres were mimicked to make music what it is today.

Amanda Petrusich says that many people that she has talked to have said, "All great music comes from the south" (Petrusich 16). Petrusich responds with "All I know is that it is mostly true" (Petrusich 16). It is clear that she does believe that most great music comes from the south, which is why she is taking a trip to the south to find where Americana music comes from and what has shaped it.

  4. In Chapter One Amanda Petrusich is on the hunt to seek out where her favorite kinds of music orignated from. The styles she enjoys are folk, country, blues and gospel. She feels the need that she has to be closer to her music, to get a better understanding of what created the music to her life. Petrusich plots out a road trip to several states, all mainly considered "the south," that could help her figure out how these differently types of music were born. The reason that Amanda chooses to travel to these certain states is because she claims that the south is the birthplace of Americana music.

According to Petrusich the south is very Americana with its lifestyle. She quotes that "All great music comes from the south," and then from there sort of describes the lives of those who lived down there. Petrusich talks about southern voices, makes them sound carefree and relaxed, and how all southerns ate pie and Mountain Dew with too much sugar in it. Based off of this information Amanda obviously feels that the south founded and shaped what is now called Americana. So to go along with her gut feeling this is why she is traveling to the south to get a first hand experience of what exactly happened and why it happened the way it did.

  7. In chapter one of “It Still Moves” by Amanda Petrusich, she tell her reader her love for Americana music, and located the setting where it is comes from. She enthusiastically says that “All great music comes from the South” (Petrusich 16). Since Americana comes from the South there are many external factors that contribute to the creation of this unique style of music. A contributing factor that could possibly be looked over would be the creation of the interstate highways.

Highways have contributed to Americana in many ways. If there were no interstate highways how would artist from different parts of the country, with the same passion for music, be able to find record companies? Petrusich states, “As the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History so widely notes: in the quest to identify the roots of American music, all roads lead to Memphis” (Petrusich 21). Memphis has a lot of rich history and people wouldn’t be able to access these riches and wouldn’t experience them first handed. The highways allowed all lovers of music to visit Memphis with ease. Also, highways allowed Americana music to be exposed to all corners of the country; people would get a variety of music. The interstate highways may have been not thought of as a major contributor to Americana music, but it has made a relatively significant impact.

  8. As Amanda Petrusich states in the beginning of the chapter she is trying to find the root of what makes the music from the south so enjoyable; specifically in early years. She is from the rural city of New York and is fascinated by their slow paced lifestyle.

The music of the south contributed to American by the ways of its origins. Southern Americans would sit on their porch, as a family and enjoy a mans fiddle or deep blue grass voice. It brought people together through hard times and times to celebrate the joy of being together.

Also, within the chapter she speaks of the importance of small roads compared to highways. It reminds me of the movie cars because the inner-state forbid passing traveler to enjoy the small towns and local culture instead they went on the busy highway and zoomed to the next rural city. Their blinded by the culture right in front of them if they just slowed down and enjoyed it.
