Question: Petrusich sets out on a journey to find out more about Americana music. How does the place we come from influence the type of music that is made?
Petrusich starts off this chapter by stating what New York is like. She gives us the illusion that it is very a busy and lively place. Then, she goes on to talk about the south and how it's calm there. Furthermore, she explains that the south is where all good music comes from. Americana, originating not from New York, but from the south is then a good example of how where we are from influences the type of music that is made.
Presentation is a major influence on the type of music that is made. The instruments used for example, such as banjos and acoustic guitars exemplify the typical instruments used in the music made in the south. It would be very unlikely to hear loud beating drums and electric guitars roaring through the radio in an environment where people are for the most part calm.
Americana is easy listening and where else would it originate, if not in a place where people like to take it easy? The lifestyles of people in a certain area, especially in rural areas, tend to be similar and therefore, what is written about in Americana music, often reflects the everyday lifestyle of those who live there. Furthermore, the struggles along with the things people enjoy are reflected upon in accordance to where they are from.
