  2. Nashville and Memphis are very different. Memphis is very poor and still has a lot of small restaraunts and homeless people. It is unpolite and barren and not inviting to new-comers. In Nashville, it is tidy and inviting. It has many well known places in it that people like to go visit because the citizens are more polite. Many musicians are from Nashville, or move to Nashville because it is known to have success in the music business.

  3. Nashville and Memphis may be in the same state, but musically they are very different. Nashville is most known for country music. "I understand that there ambiguous about Nashville, no confusion about its role as the central processing plant for the most contemporary country music" (Petrusich, 96). Memphis is most known for all its done for the blues music industry. "Without historical precedent or a thriving blues scene, Nashville couldn't emulate Memphis's sloppy, blues-based rhythms" (Petrusich, 102). Nashville tried to copy things from its neighbors in the state, but it realized they were different.

  5. Memphis and Nashville may be in the same state, but their culture could not be more different. Memphis used to be the best place to find music because of all the soulful blues singers; however now it's poor and has one of the highest crime rates. Nashville is a beautiful, tidy, and inviting city. From a musical perspective, Memphis is all about the soul in music like the blues. Nashville is all about the heart, which gives the country music born there that much more of an impact on many citizens lives. Nonetheless, when one thinks of Memphis most likely what comes to mind is the Memphis blues, Beale Street, and Elvis Presley. Although when one thinks of Nashville amazing, folk, country songs may come to mind. Overall, Memphis and Nashville both have had their high peaks in musical success. Nashville is still booming while Memphis was left in the dust. Nevertheless Memphis will always hold on to the memory of the fantastic musical artists that have graced it with their art in the past.

  7. Although Memphis and Nashville are in the same state, there is a lot of difference in music between these two cities. They are both known for two different kinds of music genres. Memphis is more about blues while Nashville is more about country music. We can also see the different looks for the two cities. Memphis is describes as dirty and poor city while Nashville is clean and more appealing. Country music became famous and known because of blues. “Nashville couldn’t emulate Memphis’s sloppy, blues-based rhythms. Instead, Nashville’s players borrowed just enough from rock ‘n’ roll to slide country songs into the mainstream (Petrusich pg. 102).” Country music basically originated from blues and became famous because of the blues.

We can see that the music difference between these two cities is still the same. Nashville is still known for its country music. We know people like Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus. They are famous artists from Nashville and they are known for their country music. Memphis is more known as the hip-hop city. 3-6 mafia, who originated in Memphis, became really popular for their rap music. There is a big difference in music between these two cities even though they are in the same state.

Even though Memphis and Nashville are in the same state, both cities vary on what they bring into the music industry. “Nashville music is great because all great music comes from the south….if you’re a great musician in Knoxville, you go to Nashville” (Petrusich 98). When Petrusich visits Nashville, she encounters several people who said that Memphis is dirty and poor. What they don’t realize is that Memphis was the birthplace of many successful artists like Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and even Elvis Presley. Yes eventually some of these artists left Memphis and probably decided to record in Nashville but the only reason they decided to record elsewhere is because of the record labels companies. These record companies are scattered throughout the country but because of Nashville being the closest city with major record labels, it was definitely better for theses artist to move and see what these companies have to offer. Even though Sun Studio/Records was located in Memphis, it didn’t offer the same resources RCA did, which is located in Nashville. Sun Records was in debt, didn’t quite have better recording equipment than RCA, and eventually artists prosper even more when signing with RCA than Sun.
Although the differences in these two cities had a major impact in music, but they still continue to have the same dilemma. Today Nashville is known for a great uprising city that offers a lot to country music. “Nashville is known for churning out perfectly press-ready pop-country superstars” (Petrusich98). Many successful artist had prosper form recording their music in Nashville. Look at Shania Twain, Kenny Chesney, LeAnn Rimes, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and many more. Nashville is not only a city with uprising superstars, but it is also the headquarters of CMT (Country Music Television) and Spike Tv. As Nashville continues to rise and continued to be a successful city, Memphis is now known for containing hip-hop, rap, and r&b. unlike Nashville, Memphis’s music industry has change hoping to one day be like Nashville but it didn’t offer much. Current music artists that prospered from Memphis are Three 6 Mafia, and Project Pat.

  9. Memphis is the capital of blues; it houses music that originated form “black” sounds and melodies. Music in Memphis is characterized by a blend of black and white. Even the way the city looks like shows that rugged sound, the city being dirty and rough. As Petrusich says back in chapter 2, “Memphis is the kind of city that feed on collision and conflict, rubbing opposites together and making fire […] Memphis has accepted disciplines from every direction, geographic and otherwise: rich and poor, rural and urban, black and white.” The music in Memphis is all about rough and real, it’s about, as Petrusich mentions, “not caring.”

Nashville music, on the other hand, is the home of country music. It is clean cut and flows smoothly. The city itself is “squeaky-clean” with its clean, tidy streets and efficient layout. Country music is predictable, standardized and carefully controlled. Petrusich mentions Edd Hurts view that “Memphis music [was] about something else entirely. Not giving a shit [was] a big part of it, while everyone in Nashville cares, or acts like they do.” Nashville music is more commercial, it’s almost always about cashing in.
