As children we did not follow our own music. Most of us listened to what our siblings were listening to or what our parents listened to. Because of this music when we were five did not really say much about our personalities or beliefs. It would, however, have something to say about our parents or siblings.
When we were 10 a lot of the music we listened was influenced by our friends. Most of us listened to pop music that was really big in the mid 90s. I do not think as kids we really took the time to analyze the lyrics to these songs, but more listened to the beat that was in the background. We liked music that was easy to dance to and have fun with our friends. What this says about our personalities as children was that we were really care free and just wanted to have fun with friends and fit in.
At fifteen most of us were still slightly influenced by our peers but we were also trying to figure out who we were as individuals. This is where music began to vary within our group. The music we chose to listen to is the music we believed defined us as teens. Those of us who enjoyed more up beat music were the ones who liked to get out and socialize and those who liked the mellower music were more laid back.
Now as we are older music begins to really describe a personality. For those who analyze music lyrics a song could have a lot of meaning. Some types of music are used as mood enhancers and some music is used as upbeat party songs. Today most of the songs on the radio are taking on a more up beat dance type of music. What that can say about our generation is that it is now socially acceptable for people to party and the popular songs lyrics do have a lot to do with drinking and drugs. Music is straying away from the traditional instrument and voice and is changing along with the technology. Not everyone listens to the popular songs on the radio but the majority of the people listen to whats popular and what the radio is playing.
