In Amanda Petrusich’s book “It Still Moves”, Petrusich goes on an adventure through the “American South”. She is on an inquiry and determined to find the answers. In order to inquire something you need to have questions (Petrusich 16). In Petrusich’s case she wanted to inquire about Americana and its past. She states that she wanted to know how Americana has changed in our eyes and how it is being preserved for future generations. Also she wants to know how the environment we come from influences the sounds we make. The most important thing she says in that she wants to know how Americana evolves to suit different people all over America (Petrusich 16). With these questions she sets off on her adventure and hopes to find her answers.
Another important component of conducting an inquiry is to reflect on what you observe. Petrusich reflects quit a lot in her book, for example when she goes to visit Sun Studio. When she visits the place she goes on to talk about the history of Sun Studio and how Sam Phillip and a WREC DJ decided to lease a storefront and turn it into a studio (Petrusich 33). She then went on to talk about the adventures of Sam and how he recorded with many influential and famous artists. For example he discovered Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and many other big icons. She also reflects on the process that Sam had to go through to open Sun Studio. These reflections really helped Petrusich in her inquiry.
When doing an inquiry it is important to respect the ideas of others. She not only talked about Sam Phillip’s story about how he became big from a small storefront, but also about how some people like Rufus Thomas did not like the idea that a white person was profiting off black music (Petrusich 48). In her inquiry she showed how there were more than one idea and point-of-view.
