  1. Petrusich is on a journey to understand where Americana music originated and what influenced it. The significance of Petrusich visiting Sun studios/records was that was the location where rock 'n' originated. Rock 'n' roll formed under Sun Studios/Records producer Sam Phillips. Phillips had created a new sound which set the basis for rock 'n' roll. With the success of Rocket 88 he founded Sun Studio and Sun Records (Petrusich 37). Legends such as Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash started their careers off at Sun. Even with successes, Phillips would sell Sun Records do to his dissatisfaction of how music was changing(Petrusich 50-51).
Petrusich discovers not only the location of where rock 'n' roll originated but also how it affected to society which adds to her overall inquiry. Rock 'n' roll broke through segregation. It united whites and blacks to a common interest. White people were able to create sounds that resembled those of the black culture. Elvis is an example of this. Phillips once stated, "That [this breakthrough] not only affected this nation, it affected people around the world, and it absolutely had a lot to do with encouraging communication between people of different races”(Petrusich 51).
